MEET OTHER PEOPLE

Who visit Wako International

As a school designed to educate students to take leadership in a world that will be 'more internationalized' in the future, we try to keep the door to the school open to everyone whether they are from Japan or from other parts of the world. Since the foundation in 1987, lots of people have visited us and many of them participated in regular classesr. Some have been educators, others have been young people about the same age as our students. These experiences have widened the students' views of the world. We hope these same experiences helped the visitors understand Japanese youth and Japanese cultures better, too.

  5. Dr.Gersh & "Japan-in-Fucus" Groups
    1. "Japan In Focus" Project
The program is coordinated by Dr.Sheila Gersh, professsor of the City College of New York to promote teachings on Japan in public schools in the city. In order for teachers to have a better understaning of the country which they teach about, she organizes a trip for Japan for a group of about 20 in July. The group visits some schools of different grades and have discussions and other programs with teachers and students.

    2. How Regular Visits Started
In 1995, one of our staff saw an announcement about the project on the BBS of the 'APICNET'', an educational network which contributed a great deal to introduction of the INTERNET into Japanese schools. The announcement said that the group were looking for schools which would 'accept' their visit. We wrote a reply and met the group in July of same year. Dr.Gersh has been visiting us with her group every year since then.

    3. Program In the School
The schedule during the visit is as follows, although there can be some changes from year to year.
      1. Reception involving a welcome speech & explanation about the school by the principal

      2. Discussions between the visitors and our teaching staff mostly on education system in Japan and on teaching in social studies subjects

      3. Visits to regular classes
In 1997, our students had exchanged e-mails on the Internet with one of the New York teachers so the meeting was very exciting for both parties.
